Population is the basic development factor of a region, and the change of population is also the basic reflection of regional economic and social development. Jiangsu provincial government held a press conference Tuesday morning on the recently released data of the seventh national census data.

On November 1, 2020, Jiangsu's resident population saw an increase 7.74 percent over the decade compared with the sixth national census. The annual average growth rate is 0.75 percent. An official from the Provincial Bureau of Statistics said that from the statistical data, Jiangsu has a strong driving force for economic growth, a high degree of population agglomeration, and the characteristics of promoting high-quality development are more obvious.

"In terms of coordinated development of population and economy and society,Jiangsu’s GDP per capita ranked first in China. In the process of urbanization, the rate of urbanization in Jiangsu ranked second in the country. In terms of population aggregation, the increment of population ranked third in China. In terms of labor supply, the total amount of labor force ranked fourth in China."said Wang Hanchun,Deputy Director of the 7th Population Census Group of Jiangsu Province

Among the 13 prefecture cities in Jiangsu, 10 of them saw increase in population. Suzhou ranked first in all the 13 prefecture cities with over 10 million population. Nanjing and Xuzhou have the population between 9 million and 10 million. Nantong, Wuxi, Yancheng and Changzhou have the population between 5 million and 8 million.

Jiangsu's population saw an increase in both quantity and quality in the past 10 years. 18, 700 people in every 100,000 people in the province now own a college degree, 1,100 people more compared with 10 years ago. The average length of education for people aged 15 and above has risen from 9.32 years to 10.21 years, providing a solid human resource support for economic growth.

"Jiangsu has rich labor resources with basically over 50 million people in the market, and the quality of labor force is rather good, that is, we have good foundation of transforming from demographic dividend to talent dividend."said Ma Yongchun   Deputy Director of the 7th Population Census Group of Jiangsu Province

However, the future population development of Jiangsu is also facing some pressure, for example, the aging population, and the decreasing trend of working-age population and new-born population.

16.20% of the population in Jiangsu are aged 65, which means Jiangsu has entered a deep aging society. With the people born in 1960s, which is China’s second baby boom, are now gradually retiring, the growth rate of the elderly population in Jiangsu will be significantly accelerated with the average annual increase of over 500,000 people.
