China has outlined major tasks and a timetable in developing green, intelligent and sustainable ports, according to a guideline released by the Ministry of Transport and other central government departments on Wednesday.

Chinese authorities on Wednesday released a guideline to accelerate the building of world-class ports, outlining major tasks and a timetable for the sector's development.

With 19 key tasks in six areas identified, China's major ports will make breakthroughs in pursuing "green, smart and safe” development by 2025, with several world-class port clusters to be built by 2050, the guideline stated.

Efforts will be made to reduce pollution and increase use of green energy to improve conservation and ecological protection at ports. A robust management and operation system supported by comprehensive facilities to cut pollution is planned to come into force in 2025, setting China's major ports on the path to reaching the world's top level in terms of green development indicators by 2035.

China will make full use of technological advances and industrial transformation to turn ports intelligent by 2035, such as the logistics and advanced connections between port and vehicles.

The guideline also includes efforts to promote integrated development, assist the Belt and Road initiative, and boost safety controls.

By 2025, China aims to achieve breakthroughs in green, smart and safe development of major ports, with enhanced scale at regional and other ports, according to the guideline released by nine government agencies including the Ministry of Transport and the National Development and Reform Commission.

By 2035, major ports should advance to world-class levels and by 2050, several world-class port clusters should be formed, with leading development levels.

The guideline listed 19 major tasks, including boosting service capacities, promoting low-carbon energy consumption, speeding up intelligent logistics and optimizing the business environment.

To ensure implementation, the guideline urged local governments to include port development in regional economic and social planning and strengthen policy support for port projects.
