East China’s Jiangsu Province will step up its efforts for the prevention and control blue-green algae outbreak in Taihu Lake, according to a meeting held Monday in Wuxi city.

Jiangsu Taihu Lake Water Pollution Control Committee held a plenary meeting Monday in Wuxi to draft plans for the prevention and control of blue-green algae outbreak in Taihu Lake.
Lou Qinjian, secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee, gave instructions. Wu Zhenglong, Governor of Jiangsu, addressed the meeting.
Lou Qinjian said that the treatment of the blue-green algae in the Taihu Lake is a systematic project.
He hoped that all region and departments in the province will thoroughly implement the Xi Jinping Thought on ecological civilization, understand the long-term, arduous and complex nature of blue-green algae treatment, always maintain strategic resolve, follow the basic laws of environmental protection, and carry out the treatment through scientific and pragmatic systems by building blue-green algae island and wetlands so as to solve outstanding problems in the water environment.
The CPC provincial chief also called on stepped-up efforts to promote the treatment of the Taihu Lake, and create a new path of high-quality development spearheaded by ecological priority and green development so as to make the blue waters of the Taihu Lake become a bright pearl in the construction of a new Jiangsu.
When addressing the meeting, Wu Zhenglong stressed the significance of cleaning up the Taihu Lake, adding that it plays an important role in the construction of ecological civilization in the province and even the country at large.

The Governor demanded that greater efforts should be made to adhere to the Xi Jinping Thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for the new era as the guide, prioritize ecological and green development, persist in treating both the symptoms and the root causes and making comprehensive treatment, follow the problem-oriented approach, and highlight key points.
The Governor asked regional governments to follow the important instructions made by General Secretary Xi Jinping, the arrangement of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council and the work plans of the provincial Party committee and the provincial government, troubleshoot hidden dangers from possible typhoon attack, strengthen forecasting, making scientific dispatch and response and resolutely fight against typhoon, flood and drought to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.
Before the meeting was held, Wu Zhenglong carried out an inspection tour on the water quality in the Taihu Lake and inquired about the prevention and control of blue-green algae in China’s third largest freshwater lake.
Located in the highly developed and densely populated Yangtze River Delta, Taihu Lake, China's third largest freshwater lake has become increasingly polluted in the recent years.
In May 2007, in the lakeside city of Wuxi, a sudden overgrowth of the blue-green algae polluted the intake area for drinking water, which resulted in the suspension of the fresh water supply to half of the 2.3 million city's residents for a week.
