The quality of surface water in Jiangsu province was on the rise last year, the Provincial Department of Ecological Environment said on Tuesday.

The surface water environment in the province has improved year on year. 342 of the 380 segment of surface water placed under provincial assessment are rated up to the standards, standing for 90 percentage points of the total.

104 of the segments are rated excellent, standing for 68.3 percentage points and 2 percentage points higher than the assessment criteria.

1% of the segments are rated substandard under the negative V level, which is 0.9 percentage points lower than the assessment targets. The main pollution indicators are total phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen and chemical oxygen demand.

The water quality of the Yangtze River Basin is generally mildly polluted. The proportion of excellent water quality is 71.6%, up 6.7 percentage points year-on-year.

The water quality of the Huaihe River Basin was generally good, and the proportion of excellent water quality sections was 75.6%, an increase of 6.3 percentage points year-on-year.

Among the 23 key lakes or reservoirs monitored by the province, 60.9% of them are rated excellent, remaining unchanged from a year ago. No lakes or reservoirs are rated substandard under the negative V level.

China is speeding up completion of a national surface water quality monitoring system to enable its people gain access to water quality information online.

With automated monitoring stations, information will be updated every four hours instead of once a month.

The water stations are part of a national environmental monitoring network for air, water, soil, noise and radiation.
