The lead cable of the Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge, the world's largest railway suspension bridge, crossed the Yangtze River on Tuesday, marking the beginning of the upper main cable construction. After the lead cable crosses the river, a 36mm diameter traction cable is pulled up between the two main towers by the hoisting machine to form a 90m high-altitude transport passage, paving the way for the ensuing catwalk erection and main cable construction. The Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge, spanning across the Yangtze River, is a control project for the railway connecting Lianyungang in the north and Zhenjiang in the south. With a main span of 1092 meters, it is the country’s first suspension bridge serving both railway and highway transport. It is also the world's largest dual-purpose load-bearing suspension bridge. When the railway is put into operation in 2020, it will take one hour or so for people to make the train ride from Lianyungang to Zhenjiang and about two hours to Nanjing.
