Donghai County of Jiangsu province has relied on the crystal industry to boost its economic growth in the past four decades since the country began its reform and opening up drive in 1978.
In the National Day festival of 1991, Donghai kicked off its first Crystal Festival. The vegetable market street of more than 300-meter-long was filled with various crystal jewelry booths, attracting more than 200,000 people in a county seat with merely 40,000 residents.
The first Crystal Festival serves as a watershed, paving the way for Donghai to rely on its resource advantages to get rid of poverty and build up fortune.
The Crystal Marketplace registered the settlement of 68 shops and nearly 800 booths when it opened to business.
In 2016, the new Donghai Crystal City, resulting from an investment of 3.2 billion yuan, was put into use, becoming the world's largest natural crystal trading market.
In the past 30 years, nearly 300,000 people in Donghai have been engaged in the crystal industry to become rich. In the past ten years, with the rise of e-commerce, crystal products have also benefited from the Internet + plus strategy.
Donghai now registers more than 20,000 online crystal stores, giving rise to a modern industrial chain covering the functions of rough stone procurement, crystal processing, creative research and development, marketing and sales, warehousing and logistics and generating 17 billion yuan of annual turnover.
