China marks 87th anniversary of "September 18 Incident"

  East Chinas Jiangsu province held a series of activities on Tuesday to mark the 87th anniversary of "September 18 Incident".

  Air-raid alarms were sounded in Nanjing intermittently to remind the people of the tragic 87 years ago.

  Evacuation drills were organized in residential areas, schools, enterprises, public institutions, ports, power plants, water works and telecommunication towers.

  Various commemorative activities were carried out throughout the province to alert people not to forget the national humiliation and to be prepared for danger.

  Students from a primary school in Lianyungang attended a ceremony and were told of the "September 18 Incident.

  People in various places of the province visited martyrs mausoleums to mourn the heroes and remember history.

  On Sept. 18, 1931, the Japanese Kwantung Army stationed in northeast China destroyed a section of the railway near Liutiaohu and then falsely accused the Chinese military of causing the explosion. Using this as a pretext, the Japanese then bombarded Shenyang and began invasion of northeast China. The Sept. 18 Incident marks the outbreak of Japan's large-scale invasion of China.
