The feasibility report for a new inter-city railway along the Yangtze River in southern Jiangsu province has got the go-ahead from the authority, Jiangsu media reported on July 12.

The high-speed railway, from Nanjing South Station to Taicang Station, will be 278.33 kilometers long and have a design speed of 350 kilometers per hour. With 8 stations - Nanjing South, Jurong, Jintan, Wujin, Jiangyin, Zhangjiagang, Changshu and Taicang, the high-speed railway will make its way to the Shanghai transportation hub via the Shanghai-Nantong Railway, greatly improving the link between Shanghai and southern Jiangsu.

With a construction period of four years, the railway will also connect with the planned Yancheng-Taizhou-Wuxi-Yixing line at the Jiangyin Station, and the planned Nantong-Suzhou-Jiaxing line at Zhangjiagang Station. After the Taicang Station, it will use the Hutong Railway line to enter the Shanghai hub.

As another inter-city railway in the hinterland of southern Jiangsu, the high-speed line mainly transports passengers along the river and cities between Shanghai and Nanjing. Through the Shanghai-Nantong Railway, cities like Suzhou, Jiaxing, Zhangjiagang, Taicang and other areas will be more closely linked with China’s economic powerhouse of Shanghai.

The new railway will also play a significant role in implementing the “Yangtze River Economic Belt” strategy, improving the regional rail transit network, enhancing the railway transportation capacity and service quality, and promoting the coordinated and sustainable regional economy growth.
