The city of Nanjing has started to scrap gasoline-or diesel-powered scooters by offering incentives to the users. Those who surrender their gas scooters before the November deadline will be given an incentive of 1000 yuan. An additional 300 yuan will be given to those who surrender their gas scooter by the end of July.

Nanjing registers 39000 gasoline-or diesel-powered scooters with a service life of ten years or even 20 years.

Local residents were seen making registration at an outlet in Fangjiaying of Gulou district to have their gasoline-or diesel-powered scooter scraped.

A man surnamed Ding said he swapped his gas scooter for an e-scooter several years ago but was at a loss how to dispose of his old bike. This time he did not hesitate a moment to file an application for his gas scooter to be scraped so that he can claim an incentive.

Gasoline-or diesel-powered scooter drivers should bring along their driving licenses, license plates, vehicles, personal ID cards and bank cards to go through the formalities.

9235 gasoline-or diesel-powered scooters have been placed on file for scrapping as of last Friday, the police said. The number stands for 23.64% of the total gas scooters in the city.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is developing a time frame for ending the construction and sale of fuel cars as it makes the transition to electric vehicles.

China is the biggest auto market in the world by number of vehicles sold, meaning such a policy change could have a sizeable effect on the global industry.

Vehicle fumes account for over 80 percent of the country's emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, and 90 percent of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions, insiders say.

Figures released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers show that sales of new energy vehicles topped 777,000 in 2016, a year-on-year rise of more than 50 percent.
