The standing members of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee convened a meeting Friday to study and implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s call for poverty alleviation and the instructions made Premier Li Keqiang for poverty reduction. The meeting was presided over by Lou Qinjian, chief of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee.
General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions on poverty alleviation work have expounded the great significance of winning the fight against poverty, defined the objectives, tasks and work requirements for poverty alleviation, pointed out the direction for us to do a good job in poverty eradication, and provided important goals to follow for stronger momentum, said a statement released after the meeting.
The party committees and governments at all levels in the province should thoroughly study and implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important directives, act in accordance with Xi Jinping’s strategic thinking on poverty alleviation and fulfill the requirements of Premier Li Keqiang’s instructions so as to go all out and work hard to ensure that high levels of poverty reduction are achieved on schedule, the statement said.
The battle against poverty is an important test and practice to safeguard the position of Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, as the core of the Central Committee and the whole Party and uphold the authority and centralized, unified leadership of the Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core, the statement said.
The province will make comprehensive inspections and improvement on poverty alleviation and make arrangement to tackle poverty in the next few years in accordance with the Guiding Opinions on Strengthening Poverty Alleviation in Three Years released by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, the statement said.
The implementation of poverty alleviation should be combined with the rural revitalization strategy so as to raise the quality of the farmers’ life, according to the statement.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for concerted actions, concrete efforts and hard work in poverty alleviation to strive for the comprehensive victory of the nation's critical battle against poverty.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the call in a recent instruction on the nation's poverty elimination drive.
A national teleconference on poverty alleviation was held in Beijing last Monday. Xi's instruction was announced at the meeting.
Xi said poverty reduction remains urgent and arduous, and Party committees and government departments at various levels must stand firm and take targeted measures to lead the masses combating poverty with a down-to-earth spirit.
Winning the battle against poverty is of crucial importance in completing the building of a moderately well-off society in all respects as well as achieving the "Two Centenary Goals", Xi said.
He highlighted the responsibilities of Party committees and government departments in poverty relief, saying it is a political task to win the battle. Governments at various levels must clarify their own responsibilities in targeted poverty alleviation, Xi said.
He urged government officials to persist in the goal and standard that the central government has formulated, saying impoverished rural areas and people should be targeted so that no single poverty-stricken area or individual will be left behind.
Premier Li Keqiang also made a written instruction on poverty alleviation, urging that the poverty relief efforts should be in synergy with the national rural revitalization strategy.
China has committed to eliminating poverty by 2020.
