The Provincial Government of Jiangsu convened a meeting Friday to study and implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s call for poverty alleviation and the instructions made Premier Li Keqiang for poverty reduction. The meeting was presided over by Wu Zhenglong, governor of Jiangsu.
Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core has attached great importance to poverty alleviation and rural development by placing poverty alleviation high on the agenda, according to a statement released after the meeting.
General Secretary Xi Jinping has repeatedly conducted research in poverty-stricken areas and put forward a series of new ideas, new concepts, and new strategies to form the important strategic thinking on poverty alleviation and rural development, which provided a fundamental guideline for us to wage a solid battle against poverty and promote shared prosperity, the statement said.
General Secretary Xi Jinping’s latest important instructions on poverty alleviation has expounded the great significance of winning the fight against poverty, clarifying the goals, tasks and work requirements for poverty alleviation and pointing the way for us, the statement said.
We must conscientiously study, understand, and implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions and Premier Li Keqiang’s requirements to integrate the ideas and actions into the decision-making and deployment of the CPC Central Committee, the State Council, the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government, according to the statement.
The meeting emphasized that we must resolutely take up major political responsibilities for poverty eradication, work hard, and do our best to ensure that we can accomplish our goals and tasks with high quality on schedule， the statement said.
Greater efforts should be made to focus on the low-income population and the underdeveloped villages, seek closer integration of poverty alleviation and rural revitalization, implement a three-year action plan for rural environmental remediation to build a beautiful countryside that is ecologically livable, further promote the new round of counterpart support and the coordination of poverty alleviation between the eastern and western regions so as to make greater contribution to the aided regions and the nation as a whole in the drive for a well-off society, the statement said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for concerted actions, concrete efforts and hard work in poverty alleviation to strive for the comprehensive victory of the nation's critical battle against poverty.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the call in a recent instruction on the nation's poverty elimination drive.
A national teleconference on poverty alleviation was held in Beijing last Monday. Xi's instruction was announced at the meeting.
Xi said poverty reduction remains urgent and arduous, and Party committees and government departments at various levels must stand firm and take targeted measures to lead the masses combating poverty with a down-to-earth spirit.
Premier Li Keqiang also made a written instruction on poverty alleviation, urging that the poverty relief efforts should be in synergy with the national rural revitalization strategy.
China has committed to eliminating poverty by 2020.
