Migrant workers in Jiangsu province earned a monthly income of more than 4,000 yuan last year, thanks to the province’s efforts to help more migrant workers get employed and start up their businesses.

Jiangsu now registers about 22 million migrant workers. Last year, 93,900 migrant workers launched their startups to hire 380,000 other migrant workers.

The province has built 676 migrant workers' comprehensive service centers.

At the same time, the province has relaxed the policy of relocation of household registration or hukou to ensure that residents in Jiangsu can have their hukou transferred to the place where they are employed.

The province has so far issued more than 21 million residence permits for migrant workers and 87% of the migrant children attend schools at the place where their parents are employed.

In the meantime, authorities in Jiangsu have tackled the long-standing wage arrears of migrant workers by launching a guarantee system with prevention, supervision and punishment measures to help safeguard the rights and interests of the migrant workers.

The issue of wage arrears for migrant workers has seen significant improvement, while more efforts are needed to further protect their rights.

The provincial authorities will carry out a comprehensive investigation to lay out the punishment measures for wage default such as blacklisting entities that default on paying workers' wages.

Migrant workers will also be instructed to sign work contract with their employers.

Aside from the inspections, Chinese authorities are also saying that local officials will be held accountable for not cracking down on companies that don't pay their employees.
