The county of Suining in Xuzhou city has set aside a 594-square-kilometer forbidden zone for livestock and poultry farms so as to help protect the environment.

Pu Jinchao, a pig farmer in Wangji town, has been vexed about the further operation of his farm which is inside the forbidden zone and is on the verge of being shut down.

The local government intervened to arrange for him to join a large poultry and livestock breeding company outside the forbidden zone.

The company not only provided him with breeding facilities suitable for environmental protection, but also sent technicians to give him technical instructions regularly. After the pigs were slaughtered, the company purchased all of them in accordance with the contract.

The cooperative mode has not only solved the environmental pollution problems caused by livestock and poultry breeding, but also ensured the income of farmers.

216 poultry and livestock breeding farms have ceased operation or relocated in Suining. 320 pig breeding farmers will cooperate with breeding companies outside the forbidden zone to double the number of the pigs to be marketed.

China has created “forbidden zones” near environmentally sensitive areas, with the aim of reducing land and water pollution. Farms operating within forbidden zones have to either close or relocate.
