East Chinas Jiangsu province has continued to promote the construction of urban ecosystems, build green and open spaces, and optimize the quality of human habitats so that more and more cities are blended in landscapes and trees with urban-rural development, ecological environment and people's lives moving toward higher quality.

The trees in the old Tangzha Park are mostly arbors over 50 years old. During the redevelopment of the park, more than 90% of the old trees, such as eucalyptus, pond cypress and mulberry trees, were preserved. By designing new lakes and small scenes, these old trees bearing the city’s “memory” were rejuvenated.

Nantong city has implemented the concept of ecological conservation throughout the entire process of urban planning and construction. The construction of park green space fully respects the original topography and landform by complying with the principles of sponge city construction and adopting natural water irrigation and landscaping. At present, the city’s greenery service circle coverage rate exceeds 92%, and the sidewalks and non-motorized lanes cover more than 85% of trees. A walk in the park has become a common lifestyle for Nantong citizens.

When the walls were torn down and flowers and trees were planted, compounds of government organizations were no longer shrouded in mystery and the surroundings became beautiful. Suqian became the first city in the province to open up the compound green space for the people.

Today, the greenery belts in Suqian have a radius of more than 80% with greeneries within 300 meters and gardens within 500 meters, enabling the local people to visit public green space within easy reach of their homes.

Last year, according to the distribution characteristics of the city's water system and major roads, Taicang built a multi-functional ecological corridor with a total length of 110 kilometers around the inner, middle and outer rings of the urban areas. The corridor incorporates functions such as slow fitness, urban protection, and leisure and recreation while connecting rural parks, urban green spaces and public spaces in a series, enabling the fragmented urban greenery resources to be networked and systematized.

Recently, Nantong, Suqian and Taicang were selected as the province's first provincial ecological garden cities, adding to a total of 8 cities in Jiangsu honored with the title of national and provincial ecological garden cities. The number of national ecological garden cities in Jiangsu account for nearly half of the national total.
