No one wants to work on major holidays like the Spring Festival but during those days some people worked holiday shifts to ensure the peace and joy for the reunion of millions of households.
In Longtan Wharf of Nanjing Port, cranes were kept busy loading and unloading while many ships were queuing up in the Yangtze River for docking. The pier that used to be desolate during the spring festival in the past years was buzzing with activity this year.
Kan Hu, an experienced quay crane driver, worked without pause during the festival though he used to take a day off after working four shifts consecutively.
Mr. Kan would work in a 2-square-meter operating cabin 30 meters high in the air. He gently manipulated the handle, moving forward and lowering the boom at the same time so that the containers were lowered to the pier. He was able to load or unload a container for every two minutes with more than 300 TEUs handled during a day.
Mr. Kan is now able to improve his work efficiency through his 20-year experiences and the upgrading of one single crane into a double crane.
He handled 110000 TEUs last year, setting a new record. With the quay cranes increased from 4 to 10 and two latest installations on the way, Mr. Kan said he could hardly afford the time to rest. This year’s spring festival is the busiest of all, he said.
The barge team is all about teamwork. At the Xinshengwei Port, two barges were seen approaching a seagoing vessel moored to the shore. Their task was to help the seagoing vessel leave the port safe and sound.
When reaching the seagoing vessel, the sailors quickly cabled the ship. Captain Zhang Cun whistled to give instructions while driving the barge. In only 20 minutes, the 200-meter-long ship was piloted out of the berth smoothly.
Nanjing Port has witnessed the gradual increase of sea vessels since the opening of the 12.5-meter deep water channel.
