Consumer spending in east China’s Jiangsu province surged 9.5% year on year to 13.3 billion yuan during the week-long spring festival holiday, the provincial department of commerce said Thursday.

Quality consumer goods, online retails and consumer spending upgrade became the new highlights of this year's holiday consumer market, the data shows.

Different from the past years, high-grade jewelries and gold ornaments were sold like hot cakes this year due to their exquisite craftsmanship and combination of fashion elements. The zodiac dog-shaped were exceptionally favored by the consumers.

Cosmetics, shoes, clothing and other products are also much sought-after by the consumers, as is evidenced by the 30% increase of sales volume from the same period of last year.

The Spring Festival holiday also witnessed booming sales of all kinds of drinks, vegetables, fruits and non-staple foods.

In the meantime, the festive dining market is equally in hot demand with all major restaurants fully booked during the week-long holiday.

In order to meet the market demand, new types of New Year's Eve reunion dinner were promoted on a massive scale. It has become a new fashion for many families to make online purchase of semi-finished products to make their own New Year’s Eve dinner.
