9.9 million passengers made train rides on Sunday, according to the figures released by the railway authority as pre-holiday passenger flow continued to climb.
9.4 million passengers were sent off by trains on Saturday across the country, a gain of 150000 people and up 1.65 from a year ago.
9.84 million train tickets were sold with 7.71 million sold on the Internet, accounting for 78.4% of the total.
The railway bureau in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou sent off 918000 passengers, 1.91 million passengers and 1.63 million passengers on Saturday.
8269 trains were put into service on Saturday with 944 temporary trains added to cope with the surging volumes.
888 trains were in service on Sunday, including 447 long-haul trains and 441 inter-city trains.
The railway station in Suzhou braced for the largest flow of passengers since the start of the spring festival travel rush with 135000 passengers sent off on Sunday, a gain of 15000 from Saturday.
6000 passengers were sent off by the train station in Huai’an city.
Most passengers were heading for Sichuan and Hunan which are the major sources of migrant workers.
Train tickets for Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing have fallen short of supply.
The highway passenger transport has also been hit by an increasingly large number of passengers over the past days.
