China’s first large diameter shield tunnel under high-speed rail will be constructed in Suzhou after getting the endorsement from a panel of experts on Wednesday.
The shield tunnel will be constructed to connect the southern side of Tongjinglu with its northern side. The road has been halved by the high-speech railway for the past 10 years.
The 490-meter tunnel shield section will continuously pass through the Shantang River, the Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railway, the Beijing-Shanghai Railway and the North Ring Expressway to ensure that the settlement and displacement of high-speed railway bridges cannot exceed 2 mm while the scenic rivers and ancient buildings in the old city are protected.
The design and construction parties have established an expert group led by academician Qian Qihu to be in charge of the review of the project plan in the hope of breaking through the technical difficulties that are unprecedented in the world.
