As the last three COVID-19 patients in Wuhan have recovered and been discharged from the hospital, Central China's Hubei Province, the most affected place during the epidemic in China, declared zero existing COVID-19 patients as of Thursday. The success of Wuhan’s anti-epidemic battle is inseparable from the strenuous efforts made by the medical teams from around the country. The 204-member strong medical team from the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital played a vital role in containing the COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan from February 13 to April 13.

It was 3:45 on the afternoon of February 14, 2020. The special moment witnessed the takeover of the ICU ward of Wuhan No. 1 Hospital by the medical team from the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital.
A group photo was taken before the doctors and nurses from Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital started to be engaged in the work in the ICU ward, less than 24 hours after their arrival in Wuhan.

Liu Yun, Vice President of Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital, Head of the ICU Team in Wuhan
On the evening of February 13th
we set up a functional department
to ensure the regular medical treatment
The next morning
at a meeting held in the No. 1 Hospital of Wuhan
the National Health Commission asked
which hospital could take over the treatment of the patients
and we were the first to give a positive reply
Under that kind of situation
we should not hesitate a little bit
The earlier we take over the patients
the sooner the patients will be treated and saved

The ICU ward is dubbed the red zone and taking charge of the patients in the ICU ward required more than courage and professionalism.

On February 27, an elderly critically ill patient's trachea was blocked by sputum. Faced with imminent danger, the elder needed an urgent tracheotomy.
Wearing heavy protective clothing and suffering from blurred vision and lack of oxygen, the doctors and nurses performed a successful surgery to save the elder’s life.

When I cut the patient's trachea
I feel my heart and temple beating fast

On March 19, 35 days after the takeover, the Wuhan No. 1 Hospital cleared all COVID-19 cases in the ICU ward.

During our mission in Wuhan No.1 Hospital
we performed the first surgeries in tracheal intubation
tracheotomy, continuous renal replacement therapy, tracheoscopy
deep vein catheterization and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
These high-risk and difficult operations
rescued many critically ill patients

As the pandemic began to subside, China started in mid-March to withdraw the medical teams sent to Hubei for support. On March 23, the intensive care team of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital was transferred to the Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital where they were later challenged with the most difficult cases.
A 61-year-old female patient presented with esophageal and tracheal fistula after long-term intubation. The clinical mortality rate was 66%. The medical team of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital decided to insert an esophageal stent to block the fistula.
The difficulty of the operation is equivalent to closing the eyes and puncturing the needle. This is also the first case of esophageal stent placement in a severe COVID-19 patient in Wuhan during the entire outbreak.

Tang Qiyun, Director of Gastroenterology and Neuroendocrine Tumor Center of Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital
If this operation was not performed
it is quite possible for the patient
to continue with the reliance
on the ventilator for survival

In 60 days, from the freezing wind to the spring blossoms, the medical staff raced against time, battled against the disease and lifted one patient after another out of life-threatening complications.

Song Jin, Section Chief of Nursing and Infection Control, Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital
I will never forget my experience
of contributing to the epidemic containment in Wuhan
It will be unforgettable memory forever

Qi Xiang, Chief Physician, Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital
We are the final winner in the life and death fight

Zhang Dingyu, President of Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital
Thank you for your great contribution
to our hospital and the people of Wuhan
You are all heroes.
