The city of Nanjing reported record high level of water quality in the first five months of this year with 22 segments of the water measuring up to the provincial standard of fine water quality, ranking first in the province.
In the battle against water pollution, Nanjing has tasked the responsibility of water quality improvement to the leadership supervision in a bid to drastically improve water quality through various measures in two years.
Measures will be taken to improve the water landscape of the Qinhuai River and the Yueya Lake while innovative mechanisms will be implemented to bolster water environment protection.
Li Wenqing, Deputy Director, Nanjing Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment：“We have imposed the toughest compensation measures in history to ensure that any organizations,that fail to meet the requirements for water to be released into the Yangtze River,will have to pay a compensation so as to make headway in river cleaning.In 2019, we collected nearly 200 million yuan in the compensation fund.”
Nanjing has set forth specific targets for the improvement of water environment this year by regulating the rivers that lead into the Yangtze River so as to ensure that the water discharged into the Yangtze will meet up the standard.
The city will also improve the waterway environment in 33 urban rivers, renovate 1400 km of sewage pipes and install sewage treatment facilities in the rural areas.
Xu Xiaochun, Deputy CPC Chief and Deputy Director, Nanjing Municipal Bureau of Water Conservancy:“Sewage collection and treatment system is the foundation and key,to guarantee the quality of the water environment.We are accelerating the implementation of the expansion project of 14 sewage treatment plants.By the end of this year，we will increase the current sewage treatment capacity to 3 million tons.”
