East China’s Jiangsu province will make every possible effort to ensure that the Taihu Lake will be free from pollution throughout the year, according to a statement released at the 13th Plenary Meeting of the Provincial Taihu Lake Water Pollution Control Committee.
Lou Qinjian, secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee, wrote an instruction for the meeting, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the water quality in the Taihu Lake, China’s third largest freshwater lake.
He urged more measures for new achievements in the cleanup of the Taihu Lake by following the Xi Jinping Thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era and the Xi Jinping Thought on ecological civilization.
Wu Zhenglong, governor of Jiangsu, expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the Ministry of Water Resources and other ministries and committees under the State Council for their care and support to Jiangsu.
He noted that this year marks the final year for the construction of a well-off society in an all-round way and the 13th five-year plan period and also the year for the final victory in the battle against air and water pollution.
The Governor asked the province to follow the Xi Jinping Thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era and the General Secretary’s important instructions from the political height of strengthening the four consciousnesses and the four self-confidences, safeguarding the authority of the CPC Central Committee and getting united around the centralized and unified leadership the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core.
Wu Zhenglong demanded that more efforts should be made to strengthen the focus on total phosphorus pollution control so as to promote the cleanup of the tributaries and ecological restoration, accelerate the improvement of quality and efficiency of urban and rural sewage treatment facilities, continue to strengthen agricultural non-point source pollution control, and unswervingly promote the optimization and transformation of the industrial layout.
He urged efforts to strengthen the preparations for flood control and drought relief as early as possible, strengthen risk prevention, strengthen emergency response, and ensure the safety of people's lives and property.
The Governor also went on an inspection tour to several sites in Changzhou and Wuxi to learn about the improvement of water quality, the cleanup of river silts, the control of agricultural non-point source pollution and the renovation of sewage works.
He also made inquiry into the concentration of blue-green algae in the Taihu Lake and the magnetic salvage and disposal the blue-green algae.
Wu Zhenglong called for greater sense of responsibility for the pollution control in the Taihu Lake to ensure that the lake will be free from blue-green algae outbreak in the summer.
