East China’s Jiangsu province recorded a grain production of 35 billion kilograms in 2023, according to the figures released Monday by the national bureau of statistics.

In less than an hour, Liang Jiabin, a grain farmer, handed over the grain from his four grain trucks. Unlike in previous years, Liang Jiabin planted Nanjing 9108, a high-yield and high-quality rice variety, on all the 800 mu of farmland he had contracted, which led to an increase in yield and sales revenue.

“The yield per mu is around 600 kilograms, an increase of 30 kilograms from previous years, which has increased my income and made me more proactive in growing food,” said Liang Jiabin, Grain Farmer in Jinhu County.

Jiangsu’s per capita arable land area accounts for 0.72 mu of the national total, which is about half of the national average.

In order to tap into the potential for increased production in limited land, Jiangsu has been focusing on major grain and oil crops such as rice, wheat, soybeans, and corn since the beginning of this year by carrying out actions to increase yield per unit area, integrating production factors such as land, variety, cultivation, fertilizer, and agricultural machinery to jointly tackle key issues and drive balanced increase in production of major grain and oil crops.

In the meantime, 4 million mu of high standard farmland have been put into use, providing sufficient confidence for high yields and harvests.

“We have built 1100 mu of high standard farmland this year so that the rice yield has increased by about 100-200 kilograms from the past,” said Huang Wei, Agricultural Assistant of Zhangmushe Village, Donggang Town, Xishan District, Wuxi City.

“We have actively introduced high-quality and flavorful rice varieties, and concentrated on integrating green, high-quality, and efficient cultivation technologies for rice, which has not only improved the quality of rice, but also increased the yield per unit area to ensure food security and increase farmers' income,” said Huang Kun, Director of Crop Cultivation Station in Funing County.

Since this year, Jiangsu has overcome the impact of 9 regional rainstorm and other adverse weather events during the plum rain period by coordinating efforts to solve difficulties and problems, and ensured the smooth development of food production.

With the support of high standard farmland, excellent varieties, and efficient agricultural machinery and technology, Jiangsu has achieved an increase in grain area, unit yield, and total production. The province's grain production has remained stable at over 35 billion kilograms for ten consecutive years.
