China had recorded over 50 billion yuan in its annual film box office as of November 13, the latest statistics show. This is the first time the box office soared to the height of 50 billion yuan since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020.
According to statistics, on November 20, 2017, China recorded an annual box office of over 50 billion yuan over 324 days. In 2018, the film box office exceeded 50 billion yuan in 277 days, and in 2019 in 276 days.
This year, the annual film box office of regained 50 billion yuan in 317 days. The Spring Festival season produced 6.758 billion yuan at the box office, ranking second in history. The summer season broke through 20 billion yuan for the first time, setting a new box office record.
As of November 13, a total of 55 films grossed over 100 million yuan at the box office, including 37 domestic films. The top ten films at the box office are all domestic films with the box office of Man Jianghong and Wandering Earth 2 both exceeding 1 billion yuan.
“More and more popular movies have provided audiences with more choices, and the demand for watching movies has become a basic way of people's daily lives. The wide variety of scripts and special effects upgrades can meet the tastes and cultural sentiments of Chinese audiences,” said Zhang Yongyi, Executive Deputy Director of the Film Theory Review Committee of Jiangsu Film Association.
According to preliminary statistics from the Jiangsu Provincial Film Bureau, as of November 13th, Jiangsu recorded a box office of 4.718 billion yuan, with 10.3109 million screenings and 113 million viewers, accounting for 9.43%, 9.21%, and 9.64% of the national total, respectively.
The box office and number of viewers during the Spring Festival, May Day, and Mid- Autumn National Day periods accounted for over 10% of the national total.
14 films produced in Jiangsu this year have been released, with a total box office revenue of 5.3-billion-yuan, accounting for 10.8% of the national total.
