The city of Yangzhou in east China’s Jiangsu province has recently been selected as one of the top ten innovative cities for sodium ion batteries in 2023 by the China Electronics Technology Standardization Research Institute directly under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
In recent years, the tight supply of lithium resources has led to skyrocketing prices, and sodium battery research, as a substitute technology for lithium battery, has seen explosive growth, promoting accelerated industrialization.
Gaoyou-based Chuanyi Technology launched a sodium ion battery project in July last year, with a total planned investment of 5 billion yuan. At present, the first phase of the project with a mass production capacity of 4.5GWH has been put into operation.
“We have currently formed sales and orders, and signed supply contracts with international automotive leading enterprises. This project is expected to be fully put into production by the end of 2024, with an estimated sales revenue of 25 billion yuan and profit and tax of 2 billion yuan”, Zou Jiayi, Deputy General Manager of Jiangsu Chuanyi Sodium Electric Technology Co., Ltd., said.
Compared with lithium-ion batteries, sodium ion batteries have more advantages in safety, stability, low-temperature performance, and cost, and are therefore widely used in energy storage, two-wheel electric vehicles, electric tools, and some other fields.
The Industry and Information Technology Department of Yangzhou City said the city’s inclusion in the national list of "Top 10 Innovative Cities for Sodium Ion Batteries in 2023" is inseparable from the innovative breakthroughs made by Yangzhou-based enterprises in the development of the sodium ion battery industry.
In the future, Yangzhou will introduce more favorable policies to promote the rapid development of the sodium ion battery industry, and strive to cultivate four internationally advanced sodium ion battery manufacturing enterprises with an annual invoicing sales revenue of 2 billion yuan by 2025.
