New progress has been made in ecological protection and construction of the Sanjiangyuan National Park. At the recently-concluded 14th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Wetlands, China announced that about 11 million hectares of wetlands would be included in the national park system, focusing on the construction of wetland type national parks such as the Sanjiangyuan and the Qinghai Lake.
Since the establishment of the Sanjiangyuan National Park, the administration has initially established a management mechanism compatible with the national park, and achieved the protection of all ecological elements and integrated management by promoting the systematic, comprehensive and headstream management of mountains, rivers, forests, fields, lakes, grass and sand, adjusting and optimizing the scope and zoning of the system pilot for the systematic protection of the integrity, authenticity and biodiversity.

At the same time, the river runoff and lake area continued to increase, and the total wetland area, including the river shoreline, remained stable.
Sanjiangyuan, the birthplace of the Yangtze River, the Yellow River and the Lancang River, is known as the "Water Tower of China". It is one of the most concentrated regions in Asia and even the world that breed large rivers. It is an important freshwater supply place in China. It provides nearly 60 billion cubic meters of high-quality freshwater for 18 provinces and 5 countries in the basin every year, which is an important guarantee for the sustainable development of China's economy and society.
