East China’s Jiangsu province will step up its efforts to promote the renovation of 1405 old residential communities in the urban areas by the end of this year, according to a handbook issued on Monday.
Jiangsu has made a list of more than 90 renovation technologies in terms of safety and durability, health and comfort, convenience of life, livable environment, resource conservation, and operation and maintenance management.
The handbook will be applicable to residential quarters built before the end of 2000 in cities or counties in Jiangsu that have been in disrepair for a long time, with imperfect municipal supporting facilities and unsound community service facilities, where residents have a strong desire to make renovation.

According to the handbook, Jiangsu will require the installation of non-motor vehicle intelligent charging facilities to be no less than 5 meters away from adjacent buildings to meet safety requirements.
In children's playgrounds, the distance between the seats in the care area and the children's facilities should be maintained between 1.8 meters and 4 meters.
Jiangsu will also require that community home-based elderly care service facilities should be located in areas with convenient transportation, complete community service facilities, and a quiet environment, with high degree of identification and can meet the basic living needs of the elderly.
Home-based elderly care facilities must be arranged on the lower floors of buildings such as the first and second floors, with sufficient sunlight, lighting, and ventilation, and the building and the outdoor environment are well integrated.
Jiangsu will apply green and low-carbon technology in the renovation of old residential areas, and use energy-saving and environmental protection equipment such as highly sealed exterior windows, photovoltaic circuit lights, and air source heat pumps to create a high-quality living environment.
