May 22 marks the 29th International Day for Biological Diversity, and this year's theme is "Building a Community of Life on Earth". In recent years, Jiangsu has continuously improved its biodiversity conservation and management capacity.
Nanjing released 3,000 suckerfish fry into the Yangtze River in the New Jizhou National Wetland Park in the Yangtze River.
As a national second-class protected animal, suckerfish will play a positive role in ecological restoration along the river and restore the population of suckerfish.
For the first time in history, Nantong, Wuxi and Taizhou spotted the yellow-billed egret and the yellow-breasted bunting, the first-class wildlife under national protection.
In Jiangsu Dafeng Milu Deer National Nature Reserve, the staff found more than 50 eggs laid by black-billed gulls on the beach for the first time.
"The black-billed gull has very high requirements for habitat. It reflects that the environment of the milu deer reserve is getting better and better." Liu Bin, Director of the Management Office of Jiangsu Dafeng Milu Deer National Nature Reserve said.
Biodiversity is an important indicator to test the quality of natural ecology. In order to make the protection evidence-based, over the past year, Jiangsu has issued a number of documents and listed for the first time the rare and endangered species, indicative species and invasive alien species.
Jiangsu has also established 20 observation stations along the Yangtze River, along the Grand Canal, along the coast and in some low-mountain and hilly areas so as to further understand the status of biodiversity in the province through scientific and technological means such as eDNA and bird AI recognition system.
With multiple measures, Jiangsu has continued to improve the quality of the ecological environment and made positive progress in biodiversity protection.
Compared with last year, the number of species in Jiangsu increased by 857 to 6,903.
Last month, the provincial party committee and government issued the "Implementation Opinions on Further Strengthening Biodiversity Conservation", calling for further enhancement of biodiversity conservation capacity and management.
"The quality of biodiversity protection is actually an important indicator to measure the construction of the beautiful Jiangsu campaign. We will establish a biodiversity observation network across Jiangsu to ensure legal and regulatory management and see the effects of ecosystem improvement." Zhu Deming, Director of Natural Ecological Protection Division, Jiangsu Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment said.
