Lianyungang in East China's Jiangsu province has generally established a complete vocational education system which is focused on developing talents that meet the demands of local enterprises.

Last year, 110,291 students were studying at the city's vocational institutes, 15.29 percent more than the previous year. Over 60 percent of the graduates have found jobs in Lianyungang.

To support the city's major industries, local vocational schools have been focusing on subjects such as navigation, petrochemistry, Chinese medicine and crystal studies. Sixteen new majors, including industrial robot applications and smart building, have been offered at the schools in the past three years.

Lianyungang now has seven education groups involved in different sectors – medicine, mechanical and electrical engineering, architecture, auto repair, information technology, navigation, and modern tourism. Ten vocational institutes in the city have been recognized as provincial-level high-quality schools.

Lianyungang is also leveraging policies and financial subsidies to promote the integration of education with industry needs. For example, the city has built nine colleges that are partly owned by enterprises and selected 10 companies to roll out education programs.
