East China’s Jiangsu province has spared no efforts to promote sewage treatment and improve the quality of urban living environment through a variety of ways. Let’s take a close look.
The Zhuxi River in the Pukou District of Nanjing has become a destination for residents to get relaxed in their spare time.
In the past, this was a hidden culvert that had been hidden underground for 18 years, and was a "dead corner" for sewage and filth.
Local Resident
In the past
parking lots were built along the river
and we didn't even know there was a creek there
We could not find a place to relax
Gong Qing, Director of the Second Engineering Department of Nanjing Pukou Urban Construction Group
Vehicles were parked on this river before
the river was full of sewage
and the water did not flow
causing water pollution
In recent years, Nanjing has made all-out efforts to eliminate polluted rivers in urban areas by focusing on source control, carrying out full-coverage renovation of sewage pipelines, and striving to fundamentally solve the problem of hidden culverts.
Xu Xiaochun, Deputy Director of Nanjing Water Affairs Bureau
We have carried out water quality
and efficiency construction
and have promoted 232 drainage areas
to meet the standards
to have covered more than 58%
At the same time
we have upgraded and expanded
the quality of more than 20 sewage treatment plants
to ensure the complete recycling and treatment
of sewage in Nanjing
In order to improve the urban water environment and increase the comprehensive carrying capacity, Jiangsu will ensure that nearly 2,300 sewage treatment areas meet the standards for quality and efficiency improvement this year.
Cities above the county level in the province will basically eliminate polluted rivers and direct sewage discharge outlets, and build a 600-square-kilometer sewage treatment area with improved quality and efficiency, accounting for more than 50% of the provincial total.
