East China’s Jiangsu province has raced to supply food and vegetables to Shanghai which has been severely hit by the covid-19 virus and are therefore in urgent need of food and daily necessities.

The Red Cross Society of Qidong city in Jiangsu province has coordinated the agriculture and rural affairs bureau, the Federation of Industry and Commerce, and the transportation department to donate vegetables and other agricultural and sideline products to Shanghai to ensure the supply of food and daily necessities.

"The Federation of Industry and Commerce helped contact the vegetable suppliers and properly arranged the transportation vehicles to ensure that the vegetables would be transported to Shanghai Pudong New Area in the shortest possible time," said Zhu Liuliu, Vice President of Qidong Red Cross Society.

Yancheng has launched a special train to transport vegetables, rice, eggs and supplies to Shanghai since April 3.

"After being given the task of transporting supplies to Shanghai, we deal with the task by loading and delivering goods as soon as possible," said Zhang Guoqing, Freight Director of Yancheng North Railway Station Freight Yard.

Binhai County and Sheyang County exerted their utmost efforts to ensure that more fresh vegetables and high-quality rice are sent directly to Shanghai from the fields and processing workshops as soon as possible.

"In the past two days we organized forty or fifty workers to go to the farmland at six in the morning, and then began to pack vegetables in a bid to supply 1,000 servings to Shanghai every day. We have hired two drivers to drive 24 hours a day," said Luan Hongcheng, Head of a professional cooperative in Binhai County.

"The workers are working overtime to increase production and supply, and produce 300 tons of rice every day to supply the market and send about 200 tons to the Shanghai market," said Jiang Bisheng, Executive Deputy General Manager of Sheyang Rice Group Co., Ltd.

Statistics from the province's agricultural and rural departments show that since April 4, Jiangsu has shipped over 5,800 tons of rice noodles, meat, eggs, vegetables and fruits and other agricultural and sideline products to Shanghai.
