The 2021 Nanjing Historical and Cultural City Expo kicked off on Thursday in Jiangsu Garden Expo. Guests from UNESCO, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, cities along the "Belt and Road", and international sister cities gathered in Nanjing via video link to explore the practical experience of the protection and sustainable development of historical cities.
Experts said at the expo that by 2050, more than 85% of global urbanization will be concentrated in Asia, and 2.4 billion people will flock from villages to cities, making it particularly important to combine the protection of historical and cultural heritage with urban planning and construction.

Experts from Portugal shared a case study of the construction of the "Lisbon City Library Network". The plan reaches out to the reading needs of the city through the construction of 18 municipal libraries, and promotes reading through some creative projects so as to create a stronger sense of belonging and identity in the city.

Up to now, the Nanjing Historical and Cultural City Expo has been held for 9 sessions, and 99 sister cities and friendly cooperative cities have been established in 52 countries.
Nanjing is also working hard to promote the joint application for City Walls of the Ming and Qing Dynasties to be inscribed in UNESCO’s World Heritage registry. The Nanjing City Wall Museum, with construction going on for more than three years, will open to visitors soon.
Intangible cultural heritages such as Nanjing Yunjin, Qinhuai Lanterns, Jinling Carved Scriptures, Nanjing Gold Foil, and Nanjing Baiju Opera have also continued to radiate charm on the world stage.
