East China’s Jiangsu province has maintained stable soil environmental quality and achieved fundamental success in soil pollution prevention and control, according to the second National Soil Remediation Conference held Monday in Nanjing.

With the enforcement of the Soil Pollution Prevention and Control Law and the Soil Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan, Jiangsu has continuously improved its soil pollution prevention and control system by setting up soil monitoring stations in all county-level regions.

Jiangsu has also shut down polluting enterprises, built new harmless treatment facilities, and carried out fertilizer reduction and efficiency enhancement to comprehensively improve soil pollution prevention and control capabilities.

The survey showed that 195 of the 204 risk monitoring sites were below the relevant national risk screening value standards, and the province had implemented more than 100 soil pollution control and restoration projects, leading the country in number and scale.

Soil experts believe that soil pollution is noted for its concealment, latency and long-term nature, so sustained prevention and control is needed.

In addition to strengthening law enforcement inspections, Jiangsu must also pay attention to soil remediation in the wake of the relocation of chemical companies and establish soil pollution risk control lists for different categories, so as to truly control pollution from the source.
