Sunday marked the 31st "National Day to Help the Handicapped." This year's theme is "Consolidate the Achievements of Lifting Disabled People Out of Poverty and Improve the Quality of Life of Handicapped People." In Jiangsu, various localities and departments have worked hard to help the disabled by providing rehabilitation, medical treatment, living and employment for over 4 million disabled people, and to convey the love and warmth of the society.
A public welfare activity, with the theme of "Wake up your ears and improve the quality of life of the hearing-impaired," was held Sunday morning at the provincial children's rehabilitation research center. There were activities including free hearing testing, hearing equipment debugging, maintenance, and children's rehabilitation services guidance, etc. From 2012 to now, 1,277 hearing-impaired children in the province have been assisted by cochlear implant programs. In 2020, more than 7,500 hearing-handicapped children have been rehabilitated.
During the National Day to Help the Disabled, various activities were held across the province. In a locality for the disabled in Lianyungang, 40 disabled students, accompanied by teachers, parents and volunteers, competed in relay running and fixed-point shooting. Lianshui County in Huai’an saw the disabled enjoy a spring outing accompanied by volunteers. In Jurong, Zhenjiang, a charity sale was going on. All kinds of handmade products made by children from special education schools have attracted many students to donate generously.
During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the annual per capita disposable income of disabled people in Jiangsu Province increased by 9.6%. All 307 thousand low-income disabled people were lifted out of poverty. The province has supported more than 38 thousand people and built a total of 3,017 "homes for the disabled," achieving employment for 32,000 people. To date, the basic rehabilitation service rate for the disabled in the province is close to 100 percent. Last year, 221 community rehabilitation demonstration sites for the disabled were upgraded, benefiting more than 60,000 disabled people. This year, the province will offer 10,000 more jobs for disabled people under the real-name system, train 30,000 under this system and support 10,000.
