Jiangsu releases annual reading status

April 23 is the World Book and Copyright Day. Jiangsu Provincial Reading Office and Jiangsu Provincial Statistics Bureau released the findings of the 2020 annual survey on the reading status of people living in Jiangsu.

In 2020, the comprehensive reading rate of the Jiangsu residents reached 90.19 percent, 0.03 percentage points higher than the previous year. Both paper books reading and e-book reading rates have increased. Reading has become a daily routine for more residents. According to the survey, each person in Jiangsu read 6.25 printed books and 10.11 e-books on average in 2020, 1.1 and 2.2 books more than in 2019 respectively. The average reading time per day was 70.47 minutes, 6.84 minutes more than the previous year.

Online reading is still the main choice for Jiangsu residents. The survey showed that over 70 percent of residents choose to read online, up 1.55 percentage points from 2019. Meanwhile, reading in physical bookstores exceeded reading in libraries for the first time, reaching 20.24 percent.
