East China’s Jiangsu province will take tougher measures to implement the 10-year fishing ban in the Yangtze River, according to a meeting held on Thursday.
Jiangsu will carry out joint law enforcement actions with the public security, agricultural and rural areas, and market supervision departments carrying out inspections of fishing boats. No fishing boats will be allowed to be in operation before the deadline of September 15.
Jiangsu will cooperate with neighboring provincial-level regions to carry out regular cruises and joint law enforcement. During key periods such as holidays and the period for knife fish to migrate upwards for spawning, the fishery department should be on duty 24 hours a day.
Campaigns will be carried out to severely crack down on illegal fishing activities. 1 fishery administration agent will be posted every 1.5 kilometers of the coastline of the Yangtze River and 1.2 patrol officers will be on standby every 1 kilometer of the coastline.
In the meantime, Jiangsu will build monitoring facilities such as electronic fences and law enforcement equipment to supervise waters prone to illegal fishing, and set up 24-hour hot-lines at the provincial, municipal and county levels to encourage the public to report illegal fishing activities anytime and anywhere.
Since the beginning of this year, Jiangsu has dispatched more than 5,200 boats and more than 120 thousand people to jointly enforce the law while investigation has been made into 599 administrative cases and 32 criminal cases of illegal fishing.
