As the launch of Yangzhou International Horticultural Exposition 2021 (Yangzhou Expo 2021) is scheduled for Apr. 8th in Yizheng, Yangzhou, the official emblem of the event has also been determined as a combination of Peony and Chinese snowball viburnum (two symbol flowers of Yangzhou), while the pair of mascots were named “Kangkang” and “Lele”.

To explore the stories behind their birth, we have paid a visit to Sinopec Yizheng Chemical Fibre, the designer and manufacturer of the mascots and related plush toys.

With lively appearance and cute designs, Kangkang and Lele bring together traditional Chinese dressing and the Yangzhou elements of the Grand Canal as well as peony flowers. They resonate well with the expo’s theme of ‘Green City, Healthy Life’ and highlight the hope for children to be happy and resilient. The designs are also in line with Yangzhou’s vision to be a role model in China in making the city beautiful and people healthy.

As we saw at the workshop, the production process of each plush doll is overseen by full-time quality control personnel. "The filler of the dolls are entirely primary polyester fiber produced by Yizheng Chemical Fibre, which is an authentic Sinopec raw material. It’s different from the recycled filler on the market since it’s safer and more healthy, suitable for babies," said the head of the workshop.

Furthermore, to ensure the safety of visitors in terms of epidemic protection, Yizheng Chemical Fibre also designed and produced a face mask with the pattern of the Expo’s emblem printed on the surface, which will be available during the event.
