Haimen spares no effort to improve living standards

The government of Haimen district in Nantong has made great efforts to lift impoverished people out of poverty and to improve the standard of living during the 13th Five-year Plan period (2016-2020), local media outlets reported.

Among districts, county-level cities and county in Nantong, Haimen has spent the most in poverty alleviation, with each impoverished household receiving at least 2,500 yuan ($362.25) each year.

The local government has also introduced industrial programs, such as photovoltaic power generation and Chinese yam plantation to help increase farmers' incomes.

In 2020 alone, the district launched nine projects with a combined investment of 3.27 million yuan, in turn increasing the incomes of 2,020 residents from 1,046 households.

In addition, Haimen has offered 7,276 people with vocational training and guidance since 2018, and helped 1,439 people find jobs outside the district.

Official statistics show that the district had 64 villages classified as "weak" in economic development during the 13th Five-year Plan period.

As of 2019, all of the 808 people in 482 households below the national poverty line were lifted out of poverty. The local government has also taken steps to ensure people do not fall back into poverty.

The district has emphasized rural rejuvenation and aimed to energize villages with industrial development.

Over the past five years, the district has built 20 special agricultural industrial parks and established 76 agricultural companies, each of which earn 20 million yuan and more annually.

A total of 61 agricultural projects worth 20.69 billion yuan in investment were carried out.

In 2019, the per capita disposable income of local farmers reached 26,900 yuan, up 8.9 percent year-on-year, ranking first in the central part of Jiangsu province.
