Jiangsu celebrates Chinese farmers’ harvest festival

East China’s Jiangsu province celebrated the annual edition of the Chinese farmers’ harvest festival Tuesday at Yonglian Village, Zhangjiagang city. Ren Zhenhe, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, announced the opening of the event.

The establishment of the "Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival" reflects the great importance attached to the work related to agriculture, rural areas and farmers under the leadership of the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core as well as the earnest expectation for sound agricultural production and food security.

President Xi Jinping extended greetings to farmers and people working in agricultural and rural fronts before the third Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival that falls on Sept 22.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed the fostering of an atmosphere in the whole society where agriculture, rural areas and farmers are cared for.

In accordance with the decisions and policies of the Party Central Committee, the State Council, the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government, Jiangsu will make the Harvest Festival as an important window for publicizing the work related to agriculture, rural areas and farmers and an important carrier for promoting the work related to agriculture, rural areas and farmers.

Celebrations were held to promote regional farm produce from various parts of the province.

At the opening ceremony, the provincial authorities awarded the title of agriculture and countryside modernization practice base to Yonglian Village.

Suzhou City issued the "Suzhou City Rural Industrial Cooperation Guidelines", and Zhangjiagang City issued the initiative on taking the lead to basically realize the modernization of agriculture and rural areas".

Ren Zhenhe went on an inspection tour in three villages in Zhangjiagang.

Chinese farmers' harvest festival falls on Autumn Equinox.

Autumn Equinox lies at the midpoint of autumn, dividing autumn into two equal parts. After that day, the location of direct sunlight moves to the south, making days shorter and nights longer in the northern hemisphere. The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Autumn Equinox, the 16th solar term of the year, begins this year on Sept 22 and ends on Oct 7.
