Jiangsu ensures rice supply through cultivated land protection

Wu Zhenglong, governor of Jiangsu, called for greater efforts to protect cultivated land and ensure grain supply on our own by following the important instruction given by General Secretary Xi Jinping during his inspection tour in central China’s Hunan province and his recent remarks on promoting the healthy development of the private sector. He made the remarks at a provincial government executive meeting.

Cultivated land is the most precious resource and the protection of cultivated land protection is related to food security, ecological security and social stability, making it necessary for government departments and officials at all levels to enhance their political stance from the political height of strengthening the four consciousnesses and the four self-confidences, safeguarding the authority of the CPC Central Committee and getting united around the centralized and unified leadership the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core, according to a statement released after the meeting.

Efforts must be made to recognize the extreme importance of protecting farmland and food security, and follow General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions on farmland protection and the policy decisions of the Party Central Committee, the State Council, the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government, the statement said.

More work should be done with a high sense of responsibility and mission so as to strengthen the bottom line thinking, strengthen management according to law, uphold the red line of cultivated land protection, and ensure the supply of grain on our own, said the statement.

Targeted measures should be taken to speed up the construction of high-standard farmland, create high-yield and stable-yield farmland, high-efficiency farmland, and ecological farmland, and build the foundation of food security, according to the statement.

Regional governments should strengthen the problem orientation, improve the laws and policies and implement them strictly, strictly implement responsibilities, and hold accountable for ineffective performance, lax supervision, and dereliction of duty in accordance with regulations and disciplines, said the statement.

Efforts will be made to deal heavy blow to illegal occupation of cultivated land for greening and afforestation, construction of green passages beyond the standard, illegal occupation of cultivated land for lake landscaping, occupation of permanent basic farmland to expand natural protection land, illegal occupation of cultivated land for non-agricultural construction, the statement said.

The meeting called for consolidating the fundamental role of agriculture, ensuring stability on the six fronts and security in the six areas, and accomplishing the targets and tasks of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and winning the battle against poverty.

The six fronts refer to employment, the financial sector, foreign trade, foreign investment, domestic investment, and expectations. The six areas refer to job security, basic living needs, operations of market entities, food and energy security, stable industrial and supply chains, and the normal functioning of primary-level governments.  

The meeting also demanded further efforts to deepen reforms and expand opening up under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, prevent and resolve various risks, and make new contributions to the formation of a new development pattern and a new height of reform and opening up.
