The Jiangsu Provincial Headquarters for Flood Control and Drought Relief activated on Monday the Level IV emergency response alert for flood control along the Yangtze River as the month-long rainy season is swelling rivers and lakes with the water level crossing the warning mark along the Yangtze and in southern Jiangsu.

Rivers in the urban areas of Wujin district, Changzhou city, exceeded the warning line with the water level in Wujin Port climbing to 5 meters, 1 meter above the warning mark. Seven water conservancy hubs were activated to drain the waterlogged areas in full gear with the displacement reaching 1.432 million cubic meters.

Affected by the heavy rainfall, water conservancy stations in the Taihu Lake Basin reported surging water level that went past the warning mark.

The provincial department of water conservancy raised the flooding response levels Monday noon as heavy rains continued.

A yellow response level is issued for the Taihu Lake. An orange response is activated for the Grand Canal in Wuxi and yellow response for Suzhou and Changzhou.

The water levels in local rivers and lakes will keep rising as the rainfall continues for the next week or so.

Affected by the flood in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, and aggravated by the recent spate of rainfall, the water levels of major rivers and lakes in Nanjing and Zhenjiang have approached or even exceeded the warning level.

Flood control departments have been ordered to keep on standby round the clock so as to be able to respond emergencies in the earliest possible time.
