Unmanned farming machines have been brought into full play since the start of summer harvest across Jiangsu province in late May.

The roaring noise of nearly 400 thousand farming machines such as combine harvesters were heard here and there across the province.

With 80% of the machines unmanned and operating in high gear, the farmers in various parts of the province have felt the sense of satisfaction to be relieved from the painstaking work of harvesting wheat by hand.

The operator held the navigation device to locate the entire wheat field before the unmanned intelligent harvester started to reap wheat by taking turns in a rectangular shape.

This intelligent harvester is not only smart and efficient, but also has an intelligent memory function, which can remember information on the path of the cultivated field, so as to optimize the operation process and improve the operation efficiency when starting to harvest again.

"A human driver will get tired but the unmanned machine will never feel the fatigue. It also saves manpower and greatly reduces labor intensity. This represents the direction of future development as intelligent devices will greatly improve agricultural production," said Han Baofu, a farm owner in Hai’an County.

Jiangsu is expected to set into motion nearly 400 thousand agricultural machines such as combine harvesters, large tractors and rice transplanters to ensure that more than 98% of the wheat will be harvested by machines and 70% of the rice seedlings will be transplanted by machines.

Zhang Yaochun, Head of Farming Equipment, Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs

"We have set into motion new farming machines with greater power and we have invested on the installation of more than 5000 intelligent and unmanned farming machines this year, a growth of 80% year on year. According to our preliminary calculations, intelligent equipment can increase the operating efficiency by about 20%," said Zhang Yaochun, Head of Farming Equipment, Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Jiangsu grows wheat over 35 million hectares of fields this year. The average yield of wheat per mu is expected to hit 377.5 kilograms, a gain of 3.3 kg from a year ago. The province’s summer grain harvest is expected to increase slightly from a year ago.
