Authorities in Jiangsu have strengthened the efforts to crack down on the illegal trade in wildlife by stepping up the online and offline monitoring so as to prevent online operators from dealing with the sales of wildlife.

By sorting out 198 groups of keywords such as "civet, snake, hamster" that are related to wildlife trade, law enforcement agencies have conducted a comprehensive investigation of 158 platforms, and strengthened monitoring of Jiangsu’s online stores in key domestic platforms such as Taobao, Tmall, JD.com, and dianping.com.

As the novel coronavirus rampaged through China in these past two months, issues concerning illegal wildlife trade and the impropriety of eating wild animals have come to the fore.

On February 24, China’s top legislature announced that the country will ban the consumption of wild animals and severely crack down on the illegal wildlife trade.

The decision to crack down on the illegal wildlife trade and eliminate the bad habit of eating wild animals to safeguard people's lives and health was deliberated and adopted at a bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature.

In terms of combating illegal wildlife trade, the decision makes it clear that is forbidden to engage in such activities as hunting, trading and transporting wild animals, especially those destined for human consumption. More efforts will be made to ensure law enforcement, establishing accountability mechanisms and banning illicit trade in accordance with laws.

The decision, consisting of eight articles, aims to completely ban eating wild animals and crack down on the illegal wildlife trade before relevant laws are amended to provide a strong legislative guarantee for safeguarding public health and ecological security, according to the legislature.

Based on the Wildlife Protection Law, the decision prohibited the consumption of wild animals listed by the law, as well as those of ecological, scientific and social importance, including those bred in captivity.
