Pu Zhening, a doctor at Wuxi People's Hospital, left for Wuhan, Hubei province, the epicenter of the outbreak, to provide medical support on Jan 25.

Pu comes from a long line of doctors and nurses -- 13 of his family members work in medicine, and 11 are already working on the front lines to contain the epidemic.

Pu's wife Li Xinyi, who works at the Wuxi Huishan Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has supported him throughout the ordeal. She has been working to spread awareness of epidemic prevention and control and following up on people who have been in close contact with confirmed patients.

Another 10 family members are also carrying out epidemic prevention and control work in local communities and hospitals, providing nursing, logistic services, and pharmaceutical services and checking on suspected cases.

At Wuhan Jiangxia No 1 People's Hospital, Pu put forward several suggestions to improve disease prevention and control.

As many respiratory wards in the hospital have been temporarily adapted from ordinary wards, medical workers are being easily infected because there are no divisions between the standard contamination area, semi contaminated area and clean area. With the help of local workers, they divided the area to help improve working conditions and ensure their mental and physical health.

By now, Pu's medical team has helped treat over 30 confirmed novel coronavirus patients in Wuhan, he said.
