The city of Nanjiing has started to expand its public health medical hospital in a bid to boost its capacity to admit patients infected with novel coronavirus.
The Nanjing version of Huoshenshan Hospital, put into operation in 2016, has admitted all the confirmed cases of novel coronavirus since the epidemic broke out in Wuhan, capital of central China’s Hubei province in late January and quickly spread to other parts of the country.
Wuhan's Huoshenshan Hospital, one of the two makeshift hospitals dedicated to treating patients infected with the novel coronavirus, was formally delivered to military medics last Sunday.
The hospital, covering 34,000 square meters, will provide 1,000 beds.
A total of 1,400 medical staff from the armed forces is tasked with treating patients at the hospital.
The so-called Nanjing 2.0 version of Huoshenshan Hospital has begun to take shape over a plot of barren hill in the southwest side of the existing hospital venue.
The Nanjing Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government made an urgent decision on January 27 to expand the city's epidemic prevention and treatment capacity based on the existing capacity of the city's public health medical center. At the same time, as an infectious disease hospital and an emergency medical rescue base for infectious diseases in Jiangsu Province, it can also provide a larger reserve capacity for treating infectious diseases across the province when necessary.
Nanjing Urban Construction Group was responsible for the expansion project of the public health center. On January 29, the group summoned the construction team that was built the public health center. The team finished with the design within one day as they are familiar with the public health center staff and the hospital construction process.
Authorities in Jiangning district wrapped up the demolition over the site in two days while the Design Institute of Southeast University reviewed overnight the overall plan and refined the professional construction drawings. The China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Co. Ltd wasted no time to dispatch workers from various places to level the land.
In order to ensure the safety of the frontline workers, sanitation staffs were arranged to disinfect the office area, operation area and living area at an interval of two hours. With the project site under closed management, three checkpoints are set up at the entrance to the hospital, the construction site and the project department while anyone who enters the checkpoint should have their temperatures detected.
The anti-seepage foundation and sewage collection system of the emergency project are designed and constructed according to a shelf life of 50 years so that in the future it can be used as a permanent building with only a little modification
By referring to the Xiaotangshan Hospital built in Beijing to contain the SARS epidemic in 2003 and the Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan, the Nanjing public health medical center is built of Lego-type prefabricated rooms made up of 288 emergency isolation wards and 32 medical staff isolation rooms that will be in use for ten years.
