魏克然是现任Discovery探索传媒集团副总裁，领导大中华区和韩国的内容制作与节目播出。他和他的团队一起监制、制作了1200多部纪录片，每年约有100个小时的节目在Discovery全球的各个频道中播出。
他曾荣获2016年国际艾美奖提名，自2003年起获得过超过15座亚洲电视大奖奖杯。他还于2001年在好莱坞获得学院奖、2000年在新奥尔良获得Promax国际大奖，魏克然还是纽约电视奖、Omni Intermedia大奖等荣誉获得者。
本期Top Talk，我们便邀请到Discovery探索传媒集团副总裁、大中华区和韩国内容总编魏克然，听他讲讲Discovery如何向世界讲述中国故事。
中国70年来取得的巨大成就令世界观众好奇
从2002年探索频道进入中国市场至今，魏克然参与制作了超过200部各类中国题材的纪录片，通过镜头记录和见证了中国社会十几年的发展与变迁。这些作品包括《习近平治国方略：中国这五年》、《极境》、《功夫学徒》、《运行中国》等。
Since Discovery entered Chinese market in 2002, Vikram has produced over 200 documentaries about China with his team, witnessing the changes and development of China in the past decades. These documentaries include China:Time of Xi, The Very Edge of China, The Day I Run China, How China Works.
美国探索频道的纪录片
《习近平治国方略：中国这五年》（China: Time of Xi）
说起为什么会参与制作这么多部关于中国的纪录片，魏克然说有两方面的原因。“中国的变革历程是非常独特的，”魏克然告诉记者，“尤其是过去的70年里，变化是举世无双的。”
As for why he produced so many documentaries about China, Vikram said the reasons are twofold. "China's journey, as we all know, it's a very unique journey of transformation," said Vikram, "In particular if you look at the last 70 years, it's pretty unparalleled."
魏克然认为，中国在很多方面所取得的巨大成就令世界观众感到好奇，这是他制作多部有关中国的纪录片的原因之一。“就拿脱贫攻坚来说吧，这么多人以这么快的速度脱离贫困，这在世界上都非常罕见。”他说到。
Vikram believes that China's tremendous achievements in many areas have intrigued audiences around the world, which is one of the reasons he produced documentaries about China. "Take the example of poverty alleviation. They are very rare examples of that among those many people who are pulled out of poverty at that speed," said him.
另一方面原因，魏克然告诉记者，是他本人对中国的感情。魏克然2002年第一次来到中国的西藏，拍摄一部关于藏剧（藏语名叫“阿吉拉姆”）的纪录片。“从那时起，我觉得我与中国就产生了一种，你们中国人所说的‘缘分’。”
Another reason, according to Vikram, is his feelings for China. Vikram first came to China's Tibet in 2002 to make a documentary about Tibetan Opera, also called "Ace Lhamo" in Tibetan. "I think from then I might say, in Chinese, you call it 'Yuan Fen'," said him.
魏克然还告诉记者，由于他本人是印度人，中国和印度同属亚洲发展中大国的背景让他对中国的发展有着新的理解。“有的时候，我觉得我是从一个印度人的角度来理解中国。”
Vikram also told Hello Jiangsu that his Indian background offered him some new perspectives of understanding China since China and India are both big developing countries in Asia. "Sometimes I feel I can understand China through Indian eyes."
“菁英导演计划”:
Mad About Duck（为鸭而狂）
说起江苏，魏克然并不陌生。2014年青奥会期间，探索频道就和南京市一起合作，推出了系列纪录片《发现·南京》。“这是我们‘菁英导演计划’项目的一部分，”魏克然告诉记者。
Vikram is no stranger to Jiangsu. In 2014, Discovery collaborated with Nanjing to launch a documentary series called Nanjing Calling. "It's part of our program used to be called 'First-Time Filmmakers'," said Vikram.
“新锐导演计划”（后改名为“菁英导演计划”）最初于1995年在欧洲首次推出，于2002年开始在中国推广并展示“新锐导演计划”作品。魏克然说：“每次我们会从将近300名导演中选拔出6名导演，然后成立一个工作坊，继续训练、折磨他们六个月，直至他们完成一部富有创意的国际化的作品。”
The "First-Time Filmmakers" program was first initiated in 1995 in Europe, and it entered China in 2002 by promoting the works of those first-time filmmakers. Vikram said,"We would select six filmmakers out of nearly 300 candidates, and then do a workshop and then train and torture them for six months until their perspectives blended with ours to create very unique young-creator-led international pieces."
2014年的《发现·南京》系列便是“菁英导演计划”的作品。“这其中有些作品拍摄的是金陵名肴，包括有一集讲述了南京的首届全城烹鸭大赛，”魏克然回忆道，“这部作品的名字我还记着，叫Mad About Duck（为鸭而狂）。”
The 2014 Nanjing Calling series is the work of the First-Time Filmmakers. "And there were delicious pieces of film, including a contest to choose the best Nanjing salted duck restaurant," Vikram recalled, "and we call that film, I still remember it, Mad About Duck."
人的故事最能打动全球观众
拥有丰富纪录片制作经验的魏克然一直坚信好的“人物”对于一部纪录片起着至关重要的作用。“这也是我们从《发现·南京》系列的制作过程中所得到的，”魏克然告诉记者，“我们想要找寻那些对于他们的职业真的有着无限激情的人物，然后通过他们的角度来讲故事。这也是我们认为讲述中国故事最真诚、最真实的手法。”
With rich experience in producing documentaries, Vikram has always believed that good "characters" play a vital role in a documentary. "This is also the learning we had from the Nanjing Calling series," he said, "We want to get to people who are extremely passionate and sincere about what they do, and then tell stories through their perspectives. We also feel this is one of the most sincere and authentic ways of telling Chinese stories today."
魏克然认为中国崛起的秘诀就在于中国有许多了不起的人。“平凡的中国人其实是中国最真实的一面。”魏克然告诉记者，刚刚上映的纪录片《变化中的中国》便是这样一部作品。
The secret to China, Vikram believes, is China's wonderful people. "There is a great sincerity of ordinary Chinese people." He told us that the just-released documentary Changing China is such a work.
该影片用平行交叉剪辑的方式展现了6个不同行业的年轻人的职场与家庭。他们当中有24小时在岗执勤的基层民警，有追逐拳王梦想的外卖小哥，有深受“00后”学生喜爱的新锐教师，有年轻的民营科研创业者，还有坚守边疆荒漠的石窟壁画修复者和为了照顾病患几乎一天顾不上喝一口水的产科医生。
The film shows the careers and families of six young people in different industries in a parallel, cross-cutting fashion. The 6 people include a police officer who is on duty 24-hour each day; a delivery guy who is chasing his dream of being a boxing champion; a teacher who gets extremely popular among post-2000s students; a young entrepreneur of a private science and technology enterprise; a cave mural restorer who sticks to the frontier desert of China and an obstetrician who spends almost a day taking care of the patients without drinking a sip of water.
魏克然说：“这些人是平凡的，但又是伟大的。他们的真诚和真实，他们如何能够在平凡的日子里保持希望和激情，这些故事是很震撼的。”
Vikram said: "The six great and ordinary people are extraordinary in their sincerity and authenticity. How they go about everyday with so much hope and so much passion is powerful."
魏克然认为在讲述江苏故事的时候，也应该发掘类似的人物。“我们应该找寻一些温暖的东西，而没有什么是比人更温暖的了。”魏克然说到。
Vikram said that a true way of telling Jiangsu stories is through characters rather than topics. "If you find an entry through something warm and nothing is warmer than a human being," said him.
期待同江苏广电一起发掘更多的江苏故事
在谈到合拍纪录片时，魏克然认为找到一个好的当地合作伙伴也是至关重要的。魏克然告诉记者，找到一个对的合作伙伴，会给纪录片创作带来不同的角度。“你需要去创作，你需要去找寻故事，如果只依靠我们‘局外人’可能会很困难，但找到一个好的合作伙伴，一切都皆有可能了。”魏克然说到。
When talking about co-productions, Vikram thinks it is also crucial to find a good local partner. He said that finding a right partner will bring a different perspective to documentary creation. "You have to set it up. You have to find stories. It’s not possible as outsiders, but it’s possible as a team."
近几年来，江苏广电也同国外团队合拍了讲述中国故事的多部优秀纪录片。三季大型全媒体新闻纪实节目《你所不知道的中国》，分别聚焦中国骄傲、中国魅力和中国神奇。特别是第三季在英国广播公司（BBC）世界新闻频道和江苏卫视播出，首次实现省级媒体新闻纪实节目在西方主流平台和国内同版同步播出，并成功销售至法国，在法国主流媒体FRANCE5频道播出。2019年1月，《你所不知道的中国》第三季获第23届亚洲电视大奖最佳系列纪录片奖。
In recent years, Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation (JSBC) has co-produced many documentaries with foreign teams to tell Chinese stories to the world. Tales from Modern China focuses on China Pride, China Charm and China Magic respectively. In particular, season III was aired on both BBC World News and Jiangsu Satellite TV for the same version simultaneously for the first time. The series has also been successfully sold to FRANCE and broadcast on FRANCE 5. In January 2019, Tales from Modern China Season III won the Best Documentary Series at the 23rd Asian Television Awards.
2017年国家公祭日之际，由江苏广电与美国A+E电视网络合作拍摄的纪实剧《南京之殇》，在A+E电视网络下属的历史频道美国区主频道和亚洲区主频道首播。这是南京大屠杀题材的电视节目首次在西方主流媒体播出，让更多的西方观众知晓了南京大屠杀惨案的真相。2018年，《南京之殇》获日间艾美奖最佳摄影奖、最佳剪辑奖两项提名，其中最佳摄影奖成功捧杯。
On the occasion of the 2017 National Memorial Day, the docu-drama Scars of Nanking produced by JSBC and A+E was premiered on A+E television network's History Channel and History Asia. This is the first time that a TV program on the theme of Nanjing Massacre has been broadcast in mainstream Western media, allowing more Western audiences to know the truth of the Nanjing Massacre. In 2018, Scars of Nanking was nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Editing at the Daytime Emmy Awards, winning the Best Cinematography Award.
魏克然认为，江苏还有很多优秀的故事可以向世界观众讲述。“故事就在那里，等着人们来讲述，”魏克然说到，“只要找到了对的人物，往往都会产生很大的惊喜。”
Vikram believes that Jiangsu has many excellent stories to tell to the global audience. "The stories are there, waiting to be told," he said, "If you find the right characters, you'll get a big surprise."
在魏克然看来，探索频道与南京已经有了合作的基础。在未来，他也非常乐意同江苏广电进行对话，将更多的江苏故事带给世界观众。
In his view, the Discovery Channel has a basis for cooperation with Nanjing. In the future, he is also willing to have conversations with JSBC to bring more Jiangsu stories to the world.
