China has approved the establishment of the country’s 11th maritime court in the city of Nanjing in eastern Jiangsu Province.
Detached tribunals have been set up in Lianyungang, Nantong, Taizhou, and Suzhou. The scope of cases to be tried by the detached courts includes maritime infringement disputes, maritime contract disputes, and disputes over the development and utilization of marine navigable waters and environmental protection.
The other ten maritime courts are in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Qingdao, Tianjin, Dalian, Wuhan, Haikou, Xiamen, Ningbo and Beijing.
Insiders say the establishment of a maritime court in Jiangsu is an inherent need for economic and social development. It is of great significance for protecting the lawful rights and interests of the parties, reflecting the justice and efficiency of the people, and improving Jiangsu's foreign-related legal system.
The establishment of the Nanjing Maritime Court is also one of the breakthroughs Jiangsu has made in adapting to economic globalization and promoting the reform of the shipping system and mechanism. It is conducive to promoting the development of the soft environment of shipping trade services in Jiangsu for its strong function of mobilizing regional and even international resources and funds.
Since the official performance of its duties, the Nanjing Maritime Court has received more than 20 cases that involved disputes over maritime cargo transportation contracts, disputes over shipping contracts, and maritime administrative punishment disputes.
