Students from Nepal have expressed their excitement after Nanjing City in Jiangsu Province and Kathmandu became sister cities with an agreement signed on October 13 during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the country.

Aanchal, a student from Nepal at the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, said she feels proud of the deepening relations between her hometown of Kathmandu and Nanjing, where she has lived for over two years.

Asmita Tiwari, also a student from Nepal at the university’s College of International Education, said she has paid close attention to media reports about meeting between leaders of the two countries and she also hopes that Jiangsu and Nepal can have closer exchanges in the fields of economy, trade, culture, education and tourism.

Jiangsu has kept making progress since it launched the sister city initiative in 1978. Now, the province has 333 international sister cities from 62 countries, accounting for 12.81 percent of the total and ranking first for many years in China. Jiangsu’s sister cities span major global economies, emerging economies, and regional powers.

Jiangsu’s efforts to develop sister city relationship is both a result of and a facilitator of the reform and opening up drive. According to the Foreign Affairs Office of Jiangsu Provincial Government, Jiangsu’s 14 overseas economic and trade offices are located in these sister cities, which also host more than one-quarter of the province’s Confucius institutes and workshops and contribute to over 70 percent of key economic and trade and cultural exchange activities. Jiangsu has also stepped up efforts to develop the cooperation mechanisms and platforms with countries and regions along the Belt and Road Initiative.

The sister city program has strengthened Jiangsu’s connection with the world, deepened the international bond and friendship, promoted economic and trade cooperation, and improved the province’s global reputation.
