East China’s Jiangsu province has strived to promote the use of the fifth-generation mobile communication network in industrial production so as to fuel the transformation and upgrading of the industrial sectors towards intelligent manufacturing.

GCL Integrated Technology Co., Ltd., located in Zhangjiagang, is a manufacturer specializing in the production of photovoltaic modules. By setting up an industrial Internet platform, the company has realized the interconnection of automated production equipment with various equipments intelligently compounded, processed, assembled, tested and transported according to production needs. Production can proceed as usual even if the lights are turned off.

Lyu Qidan, CEO of GCL Integrated Technology Co., Ltd.

Through the organic integration of information systems and automation equipment, the labor force has dropped by more than 50%, energy consumption has decreased by 10%, and quality has increased by 29%.

Production costs are also reduced. After the intelligent transformation, the price per watt of GCL PV modules dropped from 4.05 yuan to 1.8 yuan, a decrease of 55%.

In order to accelerate the development of intelligent manufacturing, the "Three-Year Action Plan for the Construction of Intelligent Manufacturing Demonstration Plants in Jiangsu Province" promulgated in 2018 proposes that by 2020, 1,000 intelligent workshops will be built in the province, and about 50 provincial-level intelligent manufacturing demonstration plants will be established.

Hu Xuetong, deputy director of the provincial department of industry and IT

For excellent intelligent workshops, the provincial finance grants rewards ranging from 50 to 1 million. For excellent intelligent factories, the provincial government gives more than 3 million such rewards.

In the 5G era, more new technologies and new industries will bring more new scenes and new experiences of smart life. At present, Jiangsu is speeding up the promotion of 5G network deployment. Nanjing and Suzhou, as the first batch of 5G pilot cities in China, are the first to launch 5G site space layout planning. Before September this year, Nanjing will realize the deep coverage of 5G networks in key areas such as the city proper, Nanjing Railway Station and Xinjiekou business circle.

Yang Xuepeng, executive vice mayor of Nanjing

Up to now, we have built 509 base stations. In the next step, we are going to build 3,500 5G base stations before September.

While accelerating the deployment of 5G networks, Jiangsu issued a notice last May to accelerate the promotion of certain policy measures for the development of the fifth-generation mobile communication network, supporting relevant departments and enterprises to use 5G technology to jointly carry out intelligent medical care and transportation so as to jointly promote the Yangtze River Delta region to become a national 5G construction and application demonstration zone through innovative applications.
