This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation will launch a special program called Magnificent 70 Years to cover the achievements Jiangsu has made in the past seven decades. In today’s episode, we will show you the poverty alleviation efforts and the performances in the north of Jiangsu through the development of distinctive industrial projects.
54-year-old Zhang Shaoxiang is from an impoverished family in Sihong County. In the past, he could barely make both ends meet by doing odd jobs.
Two years ago, the village started to adjust the farm planting structures by transferring the low-yield fields for the growth of cash crops.
Zhang returned to his home village to circulate his farm fields for the cultivation of lotus and shrimp at a gain of 850 yuan per mu.
He was also recommended by the village administration to work for the farming base by earning 80 yuan a day. In this way, he has shaken off poverty.
Zhang Shaoxiang, a villager in Sihong County
By circulating the land, the crops are plants and my work at the base ensures me some extra income so that I do not need to earn a living by doing odd jobs elsewhere.
Since the beginning of the 13th five-year plan period, authorities in Sihong have launched entrepreneurial programs to encourage the local townships and enterprises to start up poverty alleviation bases and workshops, creating jobs for 6000 low income people.
Xiangshui County has introduced the cultivation of broccoli and the flagship enterprises have helped 1200 low income people from 4000 households to achieve income growth and shake off poverty.
Heilin town of Ganyu district, Lianyungang city, has developed high efficiency blueberry industry to launch 13 cultivation and processing enterprise, which has helped the local households increase 2470 yuan in annual income.
Li Junpeng, deputy executive manager, Jiangsu Wotian Food Processing Co. Ltd
We have altogether helped the local farmers cultivate blueberry on 2000 mu of fields. The net annual profit per mu is about 25000 yuan, which means 50 million yuan a year in total for all the farmers involved.
Luo Huibing, a villager in Xiangshui County
In the past a person in his sixties was unable to earn money but now a person in his seventies has learned to earn more money.
It has become an effective channel to take industry-driven poverty alleviation as an important link so as to increase the farmers’ income and enhance the hematopoietic function in the poverty-stricken areas in northern Jiangsu.
