East China’s Jiangsu province has been succumbed to rainy days in the south and dry weather in the north as the water levels in the south exceeded the warning line while the northern regions witnessed declining water supply. The provincial authorities released on Tuesday the first blue warning for the Yangtze River flood this year and the four-level response to drought in northern Jiangsu.
Recently, Jiangsu continued to witness rising water level in the Yangtze River. The water level in Xiaguan of Nanjing exceeded the warning level on Tuesday. With the upcoming arrival of the first flood peak and the high tide, the Yangtze River will see higher water level, exerting further pressure on the flood relief in the province.
The regional authorities along the Yangtze have made adequate preparations for the flood by opening the sluice gates to discharge water and stockpiling 250000 woven bags.
In the meantime, the declining water level in northern Jiangsu has wrecked havoc on agricultural production as no water supply is guaranteed for the transplanting of rice seedlings.
The provincial authorities have therefore ordered the pumping of water from the Yangtze to quench the thirst in the north.
